LONDON, England, July 07 – Final year student Clara Shaw has cleared her diary
for the Olympic BMX final on 21st August. Shaw has a stake in the race. As part
of a fantasy Olympics competition, she and several other students earn points
when their athletes win medals.
"Normally I would have no business rooting for anyone in that race, but because
I have Shanaze Reade in my fantasy team I will be jumping up and down and
willing her towards a medal," Shaw said.
The fantasy Olympics game is the work of innovative new website
fantastar.com, founded by internet entrepreneur Rob Tong. Participants are
invited to pick a fantasy team of British athletes who then score points for
winning medals and setting records.
"I didn't know much about the Olympics before I started this, but now I could
pretty much tell you each event and who the big athlete is," Shaw said.
Shaw’s co-student Mark Hewitt said the league makes the Summer Games more
interactive.
"When I'm watching, this gives me something to watch for," he said.
Participants receive five points for each gold medal, four points for each
silver medal and three points for each bronze medal that their team or athlete
wins. They also score points for top five and top ten finishes but lose points
for disqualification.
"The fantasy Olympics game is the first of its kind and aims to whip up some
excitement and interest around Team GB for the Summer Games which start on 8th
August," Tong said.
The Olympic game is built on Fantastar’s cutting edge fantasy sports website
which allows clubs, universities and schools to set up their own fantasy sport leagues. The
free service helps grass roots sport by promoting team spirit and improved
performance while also providing an avenue for generating funds to develop the
sports stars of the future.
